A Note From The Pastor
“Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching do not neglect your gifts which were given you through a prophetic message.” (1 Timothy 4:13-14a) Okay, usually my words at the beginning of the newsletter are a little more esoteric. However, this time I need to be practical. We need Confirmation mentors! We will have five young people in Confirmation class this year and we need members of the church (not related to the confirmands) who are willing to spend time with them and me in class. I won’t pull punches – it’s a true time commitment. It’s attending class for two hours every other Sunday afternoon. It’s being willing to listen and to share. It’s making a new friend and learning new information about the church. And it’s sharing your own Christian journey and so being vulnerable. That being said, it’s also truly rewarding! Just ask Karen Weathers or Sarah Colby or Dave and Dottie Everhart. And it can be fun. For the most part it’s not just lectures of learning about church history and the way our church is governed. Some of you don’t even know the names of the young people who are in our Confirmation class. Or at least you may not be able to put a name to the face. You’d know them by the end of the process! If you are willing to share this year as a mentor to one of our Confirmands, please let me know directly. Classes will begin October 13 and run through April 27 on an every-other-week basis. I know that if you commit to this it means you can’t watch the Bills some Sundays (or whoever you may watch). But, if I can give up watching Duke play basketball some weeks for this, surely you can give that up for love of our youth! Just think about it. Pastor Nancy
