Bible Study - Minor Prophets

                                          A Note From The Pastor

        “O Word of God incarnate, O Wisdom from on high,
     O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of clouded sky;
   We praise you for the radiance that from the hallowed page,
        A lantern to our footsteps, shines on from age to age.”

Why in the world do we still use the Bible? It’s thousands of years old, how can it be relevant today? How can we rely on words set in a society as old as that?

I’ve heard those questions and many more in the past several years. And, frankly, I think those questions are legitimate. However, having questions like that be legitimate doesn’t mean we should get rid of the Bible.

I enjoy studying the scriptures. I like seeking the meanings found in the original language. I like finding meaning for today’s world. I like looking for the glimpses of God in the stories that are contained in those words.

“The words of scripture are helpful to us in the church because they impart truths that have come to us from our ancestors of faith inspired by God!” I don’t remember which of my seminary professors actually said those words but they’ve stuck with me for years.

So, I have a new challenge for you. We’re going to begin having Bible Study here at the church again after a summer hiatus. However, this set of study will not be looking at the Lectionary texts that we’ve studied for the past several years. In September we will begin studying the Minor Prophets.

There are 12 books of prophecy called the Minor Prophets. They are called minor simply because they are shorter, not because they are not noteworthy or as important as any of other prophecies. I’m looking forward to digging into these scriptural books in the next few months.

We will begin again on Wednesday, September 3, at 10:30 in the adult study room. You are invited to come join us as we delve into the study of Jonah. It’s a short book, so go ahead and read it ahead of time. Come to study with us and we’ll have some fun digging into it together!
