A Note From The Pastor

“Be sure your sin will find you out.” (Numbers 32:23b)

I can remember my father saying those words as I was growing up. I even remember him using an illustration about watermelon planting that illustrated it (I’ll tell that story in church some day, maybe.)

Some of you are aware that I’ve been having some niggly health issues these last few months. I finally, with my GP’s blessings, went to see a chiropractor. And after a couple of visits, he said that he thinks all these problems stem back to when I fell down the steps six years ago. Hmmm!

I actually think he might be right about this. And no matter what the root cause, he’s working with me to try to take care of it.

Now I don’t think it was sin, but it’s the same idea. After that fall, we dealt with a lot of issues, but never took care of the spinal misalignment. And now I’m paying for that.

Sometimes we try to take care of a problem by “fixing” one or two symptoms but don’t take care of the root problem. We do that in our health lives. We do that in our home lives. Goodness knows we do that in politics. And we do that in our spiritual lives.

The children of Reuben and Gad were getting ready to settle in the portion of land allotted to them in the Promised Land. And they were told several things that they should do, including helping out the other tribes (caring for their brothers and sisters). And then came the statement that I quoted: “But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure your sin will find you out.”

Sometimes we need to stop when we have a problem and think about the repercussions in the coming months and years. Because, don’t you know, if we only treat one symptom at a time, we may discover major problems in the long run. Hmmm! Just think about it.
