On Monday, April 15th, thirteen members of our church family joined with other adults and youth from area UCC churches to clean up Ontario Beach Park. This event was inspired by the work of a local organization founded by Tammy Bleier, the Plastic Lakes Project which is an off shoot of the larger national Plastic Ocean Project. Tons of plastic are dumped into the earth's water resources every year. It has a devastating impact on our environment. On that day, despite the raw weather, over 90 pounds of trash was collected off this beach. With Tammy's help, this trash will be sorted and reported, it's source determined and shared with local authorities for consideration of new legislation. The Spencerport team gathered 45 pounds of trash alone. We hope that we can make this an annual UCC event. The health of our beautiful great lake depends on it. A total of 31 people collected the following: Total weight: 90 pounds Total items collected: 1280 Top three items: Foam pieces (127, 9.9%), cigarette butts (126, 9.8%), and plastic pieces (118, 9.2%). 79% of all items collected were plastic or had a plastic component. Note the foot prints in the clean beach when they were done. Thanks to the members of our church who participated.
