“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.
Do what it says.” (James 1:22, NIV)
I like this translation for the verse from James. The way I learned it as I was growing up is, “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” It means the same thing: Don’t just sit around rocking your way to the Christian faith, get to work doing it!
With Labor Day coming up, the idea of getting to work is important, not only for our everyday lives, but for our faith lives. Labor Day is not just the signal for the end of summer and the beginning of school. It is the day when we can all celebrate the work that we do.
Sometimes we try to separate the work that we do for the church and our God from the work that we do every day. But the scripture tells us that we should do everything to the glory of God. That means everything, every day!
I know that’s not easy. Some days we just want to not think about our faith when we act. But, friends, the challenge is that we should live our faith doing what the Word says.
So as we celebrate Labor Day, remember to celebrate all that you do and do it to the glory of God.
