The next meeting will be held at the church on Monday, February 13th at 7:00 pm.  The book we will be discussing is I’ll Be Back When Summer’s in the Meadow, A World War II Chronicle, Volume 1, 1942-1943 compiled and edited by Melanie Ippolito.  The letters written by an American soldier (hometown, Lockport, NY) and his Northern Irish Fiancée during WWII give very detailed coverage of how the war affected them and the people around them. This is the first of three planned volumes, the second to be released in the spring of 2012.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson.  Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired) leads a quiet life in the village of St. Mary, England, until his brother's death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. The next meeting of the Book Club will be on Monday, July 18th, at 7:00 pm at church.  The book we will be discussing is "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen.

Set during the Great Depression, this novel is told in flashback by nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski who recounts the period he spent with a traveling circus.

When 23 year old Jacob learns that his parents have been killed in a car crash, leaving him penniless, he drops out of Cornell Veterinary School and parlays his expertise with animals into a job with the circus, where he cares for a menagerie of exotic creatures. He also falls in love with Marlena, one of the show's star performers—a romance complicated by Marlena's husband, the unbalanced, sadistic circus boss who beats both his wife and the animals Jankowski cares for.

The next meeting of the Book Club will be Monday, March 7th, at 7:00 pm at the church.  The book we will discuss is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  Set in Germany during WWII, this is the story of Liesel Meminger--a young German fostergirl.  Her book stealing and story telling talents help to sustain her family and teh Jewish man they are hiding.
